Bulgarian Explanatory Dictionary

L. Andreychin, L. Georgiev, St. Ilchev, N. Kostov, Iv. Lekov, St. Stoykov, Tsv. Todorov,
4th edition by Dimitar Popov

Publishing House "Nauka i Izkustvo" ("Science & Art")
1997, 1093 p., hardback

The Bulgarian Explanatory dictionary (BED) was compiled by seven Bulgarian linguists and lexicographers: L. Andreychin, L. Georgiev, St. Ilchev, N. Kostov, Iv. Lekov, St. Stoykov, Tsv. Todorov. Their work became widely popular and won them the jokular but respectful name "Svety Sedmochislenitsy". The BED, which was intended to be an easily accessible reference book about the meaning and the usage of Bulgarian words, is characterised by a simplified structure of the lexical entries, where the major and most important word meanings are given clear and precise definitions. Also included are the most typical and often used idiomatic and phraseological expressions. The illustrative material comprises short representative expressions construed by the authors or quoted from classic works of fiction. When deemed necessary, words are accompanied by register and origin information.

The new edition of the Bulgarian Explanatory Dictionary (1994, revised and updated by Dimitar Popov) has a considerably enriched lexicon - inluded in it are about 10 000 new words, which have entered the language during the last few years; some rare, obsolete or regional words which are no longer present in the speech of the Bulgarian public have been taken out, some of the explanations have been updated, the illustrative material has been enriched with new expressions and collocations, at the same time trying to avoid too lengthy old examples. Thus edited - revised and updated -the Bulgarian Explanatory Dictionary, similar to previous editions, is one of the major reference books on the meaning and usage of Bulgarian words.
